I was tired of "professionals" telling me how to raise my kids, aren't you?
Can you imagine a life without the medication?
A weekday evening free from arguments and struggles with homework? A day filled with calmness, no calls from teachers, and tantrum free?
For a lot of years I couldn't.
But I’ve found a secret to working with those with ADHD, and to managing my own.
A few simple tricks will help get you the lifestyle you have always wanted. One of happiness and peace! One of success! With or without medication, the information shared in this eBook will change the way you look at ADHD!
So, why should you care what I have to say and where did I come from anyway?
Well, I am a mom (with ADHD) and I have two daughters with ADHD.
My husband has it, my mother has it, and much of my extended family has it. No, I am not kidding. Can you imagine our family get-togethers? A successful holiday for us is if we manage to get one person talking at a time!
So, we know I've got the life experience. I know what it's like to have ADHD, live with it, be raised by it, and raise kids with it. Now, do I know how to succeed with ADHD?
I graduated college with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology as a member of the National Honors Society in Psychology (Psi Chi), and what I learned there didn't prepare me for raising two kids with ADHD.
My oldest daughter is on track to graduate High School with an Advanced Diploma this coming June. She is also on the Varsity soccer team and working a 20 hour work week on average.
My youngest daughter is excelling in school, dance and Tae Kwon Do. She has gone from being tested for learning disabilities to getting 100% on her excel Math papers. She was also recently named Most Improved Student in Tae Kwon Do.
Okay, success with ADHD. Check. Now for the real question.
How did I find the secret and how do you know it works?
In the eight long years since my oldest daughter's diagnosis, countless hours of research, phone calls and visits with dozens of professionals, and more books than a library, we have finally found the secrets!
I’ve learned the hard way so you don’t have to!
It's taken more time than I care to calculate, and believe me this has been researched and tested extensively.
So, now that we’ve covered that, let me tell you a little more about myself. As I mentioned, I am the mother of two vibrant and energetic daughters. My oldest, 17, will be graduating high school this year and is keeping herself very busy. When she was in third grade she was tested for the gifted program.
She didn’t make it.
You wouldn’t believe what her school counselor told us!
We were told that she had barely missed getting in to the program. Then the counselor told us that because our daughter was so smart she would oftentimes be working for people dumber than her -- some of her teachers were early evidence of that -- so she’d have to learn to work down to their level.
Are you kidding me!? I could not have honestly heard that.
So, being very irritated, and not one for fading into the woodwork, I called her pediatrician. I asked him about the ADHD thing he had mentioned in the past. We discussed it, a formal diagnosis came, and he prescribed a stimulant medication that would help my daughter.
At this point I would have tried anything!
So, once she had been taking the medication for a while the school agreed to re-test her. And surprise, she made the gifted program with flying colors. Finally, she would be dealing with teachers who could keep up with her.
Things were going alright. She was doing better in school, staying out of trouble, getting along with her peers better and enjoying the gifted program.
For a couple of years we went to the doctor’s office every month to pick up the written prescription and monitor her weight, then went to fill the prescription.
About the time I was getting tired of it all I got some horrifying news. My daughter, at the age of 11, was diagnosed with Anorexia (now a known side effect of the medication she was taking). 11 years old! I was beside myself.
So, she was hospitalized for 3 weeks, put on bed rest until her weight improved and her heart function increased, and was finally brought home. She had a long recovery at home, with a lot of intense times and conversations.
This may have been the worst experience our family endured.
It changed my daughter forever. It stripped her of her childlike innocence, dealing with so many doctors. The constant assumptions people made about her wanting to be skinny were horrible for her to deal with.
Clearly, once home she did not start the medication for ADHD again as weight loss was a known side effect. So, I began researching.
I looked everywhere, bookstores, online, libraries, out of town libraries (thinking larger cities would have more info), professionals, anyplace I thought might have answers.
What did I find? I found theories. I found places to spend money. I found a number of people looking to prey on parents’ desperation.
But I found no solid answers. It seemed as if everywhere I looked had either too few answers to help or too many to process.
Currently I have my own library of dozens upon dozens of books on ADHD, studying, organizing, and the list goes on. It’s crazy! Not to mention costing a small fortune.
I went to the professionals, tried biofeedback, read trade journals, frequented the medical journals and research studies, spent a lot of time on the Center for Disease Control website and other government websites. I learned all there was to learn.
And what did I find? There is a better way!
There is a way to see our ADHD kids succeed, with or without medication. There is a way for them to excel, and it doesn’t mean them suffering endless humiliation! And I could help.
So I did. By this time I had another daughter, also ADHD. She is actually far more hyperactive than my oldest. She was suffering far more in school. In fact, she was being tested for learning disabilities at the time.
*A humorous side note: She did not qualify for learning disabilities, but they had to extend the test over a couple of days because they couldn’t get her to focus. A clue?!
I began to institute changes in our house. Small things seemed to be making the biggest difference! We were amazed, family and teachers alike! We couldn’t believe these were the same kids!
· Their grades came up (30% in 6 weeks).
· Their self esteems improved greatly!
· They were excited about school.
· They didn’t dread going and facing the teachers.
· No more missing assignments!
· No phone calls from the school for behavior related issues.
· Fewer absences.
Our results were amazing!
I was so excited I wanted to see if it worked with other kids. It did! I began using the strategies with my Girl Scout troop (which actually had a half dozen or so kids succeeding with ADHD).
They were great. Their behavior improved. They were corrected much less for not listening, and enjoyed things much more (even the boring parts of the meetings).
The strategies I implemented with my childrens' schools (one elementary and one high school) made a huge difference! The teachers were eager to help the kids do well. They wanted them to succeed.
I was able to show them ways to help my kids without adding additional work for themselves. They loved me! And they loved my kids! And the kids loved them too!
The best thing about all of this? It also saved us a lot of money!
It freed up time and money for me. I no longer spend money on doctors and medications. I’m not constantly buying the next best thing to “find the answer!” I don’t run all over town going to book stores.
I don’t fight with the kids at night to do their homework. We get along so much better because there’s no constant nagging that goes on. Their teachers enjoy them and I get good reports (in fact my youngest daughter's last progress report was all A's and B's, and my oldest is holding a 4.0)!
So, how did I get this lifestyle and how much work will it take for you to get it?
As I mentioned earlier, it took me thousands of hours and dollars to finally crack the code! I’ve spent ridiculous amounts of money and time figuring this all out, and it works!
I'm putting them into print for you to use!
Why would I do this?
Well, for a few reasons. Here they are:
· I have the answers, I’d like to share them
· ADHD is a relatively new “problem”
· I believe there is a way to slow down the prevalence of medicated school children
· Adults with ADHD typically earn $4,500 to $10,000 less per year than their non-ADHD counterparts (many of these strategies will work for you too!)
· Left untreated, I believe ADHD can become a serious epidemic in the world
· Medication is not always the best answer
· The side effects of medication can make it an unacceptable answer to many
· Unfortunately, medication alone is the most cost-effective “treatment” for ADHD
· Behavioral treatments can be prohibitively expensive
· The costs of ADHD in the family are still not measured effectively, but it is known to be terribly expensive
· Annual spending on ADHD is known to surpass spending due to drug addictions or alcoholism
For these reasons and many more I have decided to make these solutions available for you.
Other families may not know how expensive ADHD is, but you probably do!
